Bright colored and blobby shaped patterns of the poison dart frog mixed together with the strangely formed muscles in Japanese woodcuts. Kaeru kaeru combines both inspirations in one typeface.

It was created in a seminar called "Type – Inspiration elsewhere" led by Jérémy Landes at the HfG Karlsruhe. The idea of the seminar was, to take different inspirations out of nature and illustrations and try to combine them to one typeface.

Kaeru Kaeru is our first co-release with another type foundry. On the 18/06/2019, Kaeru Kaeru was released at the exact same on the website of the NoFoundry an Velvetyne. NoFoundry is the student lead foundry of the HfG Karlsruhe. They release fonts and organize events and workshops. Isabel Motz is one of the founding members of the NoFoundry.

Der Tomatenfrosch hat einen gedrungenen, in der Draufsicht beinahe rundlichen Körper mit einem breiten Kopf und sehr kurzer Schnauze. Die Augen mit ihren nahezu runden Pupillen stehen weit auseinander. Die Trommelfelle sind sichtbar und bleiben kleiner als der Augendurchmesser. Die Kieferknochen sind bezähnt. Es ist ein deutlicher Geschlechtsdimorphismus zu beobachten, da die Männchen nur höchstens 65, die Weibchen aber bis zu 105 Millimeter lang werden. Solche Exemplare erreichen dann Gewichte bis zu 230 Gramm. An den mit Schwimmhäuten versehenen Hinterfüßen besitzt die Art unterseits schaufelförmig umgebildete Grabschwielen (vergleiche beispielsweise: Knoblauchkröte), mit denen sie sich im Boden eingraben kann. Die kurzen Beine befähigen die Tiere nicht zu großen Sprüngen; dafür klettern sie gelegentlich.
Poison dart frogs provide classic examples of warning signals: potent toxins signaled by distinctive, conspicuous coloration. We show that, counterintuitively, the bright yellow and blue-black color of Dendrobates tinctorius (Dendrobatidae) also provides camouflage.
